Allah or other name, let us not blanket ourselves with religious bigotry

The attacks on churches in Klang Valley are indeed despicable and an act of cowardice. The government must take every possible action to bring the perpetrators to justice and to ensure that the safety of Christians are given the utmost importance. I have just returned from class and discussed the Allah issue with my students. Of course, there were disagreements towards whether the Christians should be allowed to use the word or not. The disagreements were primarily theological and historical but I do not want to argue about either one of them here in this blog. Despite the disagreements, we hastened to believe that there is hope for Malaysia to become a model for inter-religious and inter-racial harmony if the issue is tackled justly, taking into consideration the interest of the country as a whole. The government must do what is RIGHT for the country and not being influenced by a few people who have the agenda to undermine the country's religious tolerance. Personally, I am shocked to learn that such attacks have happened in Malaysia that claims itself to be a "model" Islamic country. I received a message from a friend telling me about the attacks. At first, I did not believe that such thing would happen in Malaysia especially after the government has given the assurance that it would make sure no untoward incidences would happen while waiting for the court to make its decision on the Allah issue.

If the government wants to maintain Malaysia's image as a "model" Islamic country and to ensure a continued peace and stability, it has to do the following actions--and they must be done immediately.

First, the government has to consider establishing a National Religious Council to advise it on matters related to religion. So far, the government has only one religious adviser with a ministerial portfolio in the Prime Minister's Department. The government must accept the fact that Malaysia is also home to numerous religious adherents who want their rights to be protected. Having a permanent National Religious Council will ensure that issues related to religious sensitivity are dealt with rationally and justly. This Religious Council should act not only as an advisory body but as the highest decision-making entity to oversee religious affairs in the country. As I wrote before in this blog, membership in the Council has to reflect Malaysia's diverse religious communities. We can call the Council 1Malaysia National Religious Council. Again, as I suggested in my earlier posting, the head of the Council has to be rotated among the main religious leaders in Malaysia.

Second, the government must initiate a regular inter-religious dialogue among religious leaders in the country. This inter-religious dialogue must serve as a platform for the religious leaders to find a common ground and to determine universal religious values that are acceptable to all Malaysians. If Muslims, Christians and other religious adherents share a common ground and promote the same universal religious values, I believe any issue related to religion can be dealt with easily.

Third, the government must not practice double standard in addressing religious issues. Even though Islam is clearly stated as the official religion in the country, the government must CONVINCE Malaysians that it is also a government that champions the religious freedom of others. It is indeed time for Najib to prove that his 1Malaysia concept is not just a political rhetoric but a workable slogan that can be translated into real actions for the benefits of all Malaysians.

For all Malaysians, we can play our part in preserving the religious harmony in our country. We do not have to go to the streets to demonstrate, to throw Molotov cocktails to intimidate others, to write inflammable comments to incite fear and anger, or to resort to all kinds of actions that do not help to calm the tension among Malaysians.

I call on all Malaysians to view this issue seriously and to speak up in defense of religious freedom in Malaysia. I know for sure that a lot of Malaysians out there are concerned about what is happening but have chosen to be in the silent minority. I call these people the "progressives" and "moderates". I sincerely believe that Malaysia's hope now lies in the action of these people who want to see the country to move forward and who regard the Allah issue as "petty". Our real concern should be how to develop the economy, how to produce university students of high quality, how to reduce the incidence of poverty, how to achieve the so-called Vision 2020, and other numerous challenges that will determine Malaysia's success in the international arena. Seeing the whole episode of the Kartika incidence and now the Allah issue, I can only conclude that unless there is a drastic change in Malaysia, it will never achieve its dream of becoming a developed country in 2020. A developed country will not allow its citizens to spend much of their quality time to argue endlessly about religion. So, really, the choice is in our hands.

Before I comments on this.... pardon me for my English Vocabulary.

The attacks on churches in Klang Valley are indeed an act of cowardice. The instigators of these act need to know how to think rationally before doing anything rash. I believed that some people thought that by doing this action, they have made that impact that they needed to do but the impact that they are sending only cause chaos and disruption to our country. This issue of using 'Allah' word in Herald Magazine has been quite the talk of the town lately and the decision made has backfired on a most chaotic way.

In my opinion, as a Muslim, as I have said in your class today. Most Muslims are afraid of other religion using the word 'Allah' because the word 'Allah' represent what the Muslims been worshiping in our entire life and for other religion to use it also as the foundation of their religion thrown things off balance for Muslims. Some people basically are scared of change and some embrace it as we go along this world. Change as drastic as this, needs time for the people to accept it into their livelihood. I have skimmed the Old Testament and as I go along in the Old Testament, 'Allah' is mentioned as The One created Heaven and Earth. This passage explained to me that Christians also uses 'Allah' in their religion. This to me is very important because I actually never read a Bible before and in The Old Testament there are mentions of the word 'Allah'. So can the Christians use the word 'Allah', I believe so BUT since both religion are using the same word, comes the debate. What will we do? What will the Government do? Why are we allowing this? Why are we not allowing this? The questions...endless. The answers...unknown?

I agree to your solution as how to deal with this problem. The government needs to conduct this inter-religious dialogue so that chaos would not ensue and calm the hearts of the people by finding common ground to which all religion could agree on.

Anyway, I want to comment on this further but due to my lack of information on religious issue, I will stop here for now.

If by any means what I said have offended someone, please forgive me.

hi sir. I'm one of your student who was was study politics and government an my group is AMD2P1. in my opinion, this issue is an old issue as sir had mention in our first tutorial. but there are some people who was using this issue for political usage and their own usage. In my point of view, this issue is being spreading very fast and there are some people who had become the person who was trying to making the christian and muslim being enemy and fighting each other so that the current issue that hit our country will dissolve just like that. The people now had forgot about the FKFZ issue, the engine jet issue which had being stolen from the Malaysian Army warehouse. So I think that this issue had being politically issue purposely for the people who want to garb citizen's attention from keep talking about the previous issue.i think this people are taking the advantages on malaysian sensitivity who was will become very aggressive and sensitive when we are talking about their religion. Unfortunately, these people had succeed to divide the people in Malaysia into two major groups. If this matter was not being settle as soon as possible, the 13 May 1969 tragedy will happen again. As I saw, our prime minister had try his best to settle this issue and yesterday, the sultan had giving his order to avoid the non-muslim to use the word Allah and he also had order the Fatwa council of Malaysia to check and make the fatwa and enforce it. I'm seeing this as one of the very effective solution as the people in Malaysia know that the sultan has the power when it comes to Islam matter in Malaysia. But from what I see, this issue is not going to solve if the people still keep fighting each other and don't want to listen on what had the sultan and the fatwa council or the authority tell them to do..

*this is my personal opinion. I'm sorry if there are some words that i had used may bashing or hurt the feeling of anyone. thank you

Hi there, very intellectual discussion thus far.

I will have to give credits to the govt- the govt has successfully curbed the act of violence among people of different races. One must admit, this is a very difficult (if not impossible) task to be undertaken.

We should be proud to be Malaysians for, the attacks could be more damaging than what it appears to be. One cannot disregard the racial friction but, it appears that Malaysians agree these attacks and other issues are only small matters that one can overlook for the sake of maintaining harmony and trust among each other.

Further, being an Islamic country, the government has every right to defend the honor of the religion it upholds.

The people of Malaysia's collective restraint is undeniably very strong, though many irresponsible quarters try to shake this restraint, so far, they have not succeeded. Let's just hope, Malaysia will stay peaceful.

Yes, we don't want a 13 May repeat. And for that, we must make it a point to look at other races with open minds because what happen in our country now is the work of some very, selfish people.

We can share ideas. Please do visit my blog: wayangkulitmoden.blogspot.com

Ridley your comment are an unappropriate one... to even says (if that you are the 'son of God'). Choose your words carefully, for it can touch others which you may can't comprehend. That is all.BTW, You can't say to others who is 'our' God...it is simply an issue of Faith for each religion.

I can't understand why you(dr. Arnold) posted this comment. Surely you can see the errors.

Arnold Puyok said...

Anonymous,

Can you please be more specific about the "errors"? Were you talking about grammatical errors or factual ones? Surely, Ridley couldn't be serious when he said he would "summon" disasters 100 times worse than what we have already seen. Anyway, my apology if you were offended by Ridley's comments. The best way to respond to his/her comments is to engange him/her (if you think such an action is necessary and does not waste your time)
